Sicura Jump Hour (Baumgartner 158, 1970s)

Description: Sicura jump hour from the 1970s, a Swiss watch with a 17-jewel manual-wind Baumgartner Caliber 158 movement. Gold-plated TV-shaped case at approximately 36-38mm wide, with a brushed finish & a domed crystal. Gold dial that shows the time on discs instead of hands: a window at 9 o’clock for the hour marked H, an arched window at the top for the minutes & a window at 3 o’clock for the date marked D, plus a central seconds hand. Sicura, 17 Jewels & Swiss Made printed on the dial. Brown reptile-style leather strap, aftermarket & not original.

Story of This Watch: Sicura was a Swiss watch company founded in Grenchen in 1939, & under Ernest Schneider in the 1960s & 70s it became known for oddball tool watches under the slogan “The Specialist for Specialities”. Jump hours like this one were part of that: a space-age idea that replaced hands with digital discs, built mechanically years before digital watches went electronic. Sicura’s best-known moment came in 1979, when Schneider took over the Breitling name & Navitimer rights & brought Breitling to Grenchen, & the Sicura name was eventually folded into Breitling. This watch was made by Sicura, not Breitling, but it’s from the company that kept Breitling alive. The TV-shaped gold case, arched minute window & disc display are the draw here, not the name alone.
