Description:
A vintage Seiko 5 Automatic from the 1970s, featuring a distinctive square TV-style case & geometric two-tone checkerboard dial. The approximately 35mm x 37mm stainless steel case features angular edges & a broad bezel, reflecting the experimental watch designs of the era. Its silver-champagne & charcoal-grey dial is divided into contrasting quadrants, complemented by gold-tone hands, applied circular hour markers & a day/date display at 3 o'clock. Powered by Seiko's Caliber 6309, a 17-jewel automatic movement operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour with approximately 47 hours of power reserve. The movement features quickset day/date functionality & automatic winding. Fitted with a smooth black leather strap.
Story of This Watch:
The 1970s marked one of Seiko's most experimental periods in watch design. Moving beyond traditional round cases, the brand embraced bold geometric shapes, unconventional dial textures & distinctive proportions. This Seiko 5 captures that era through its square TV-style case & contrasting checkerboard dial, creating a design that feels distinctly different from conventional dress watches. Beneath its unusual exterior sits the Caliber 6309, a dependable Japanese automatic movement also used in Seiko's celebrated Turtle divers. A compelling example of how Seiko combined reliable mechanical engineering with adventurous design during the 1970s.
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition, rated 4/5, with visible age-appropriate patina. The two-tone checkerboard dial retains its distinctive geometric finish, with natural discoloration & aging consistent with its vintage character. Gold-tone hands & applied markers show signs of age. The stainless steel case exhibits surface scratches & wear around the bezel, while the crystal shows visible marks. Fitted with a black leather strap. No polishing or servicing reported. No box or papers.
