HMT Kohinoor - Salmon Sunburst Dial (Hand-Winding, 1988)

Description: HMT Kohinoor manual-wind from 1988, with a 17-jewel Para Shock movement. Salmon sunburst dial with applied silver bar indices, small dots at the index ends, matching baton hands & a central seconds hand. No date window, which keeps the face clean & uncluttered. Stainless steel case at approximately 36mm with 18mm lug width. Stainless steel link bracelet.

Story of This Watch: HMT was India’s national watchmaker, set up in the 1950s as Hindustan Machine Tools & building its watches with technical collaboration from Citizen of Japan. For decades an HMT on the wrist was the default Indian watch, & the Kohinoor was one of its dressier lines. Para Shock on the dial is HMT’s shock protection for the balance, a practical detail for a watch meant to be worn every day. The salmon sunburst dial is what makes this one stand out. Most HMTs of the era came in silver or white, so this copper-pink face catches light in a way the standard dials don’t.
